The terms “cleanse” and “detox” are used as synonyms. The most popular programs are centered on juices or smoothies with little or no solid food, or on eliminating a wide range of supposedly toxic food. Sometimes vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant are eliminated on some of these programs because they are said to cause inflammation.

These plans essentially starve the body of the fuel it needs; dropping blood sugar, which the body attempts to correct by releasing a reserve of glucose from the muscles.

But prolonged starvation can lead to hypoglycemia (potentially dangerous low blood sugar) and can cause anxiety, nausea, fatigue, dizziness, and confusion. The gastrointestinal tracts work better when it’s used, that why diets without enough calories or solid food can slow down your digestion and cause constipation. Colon cleansing has no proven benefits and may cause serious complications.

There are no rigorous clinical trials of detox diets or cleanses been conducted. The few studies are unreliable, due to their major methodological flaws. There isn’t scientific evident to support detox. (Please, don’t confuse this type of detox with drug and alcohol detox programs, or poisoning detoxification, both of which are supported by research).

If you have a history of eating disorders, detoxes can be a trigger for relapse. A restrictive diet like a cleanse or detox can be the spark that sets off an eating disorder.
